In “Three Questions for”, I search out individuals who stand out and as such are meaningful to their environment. In these three questions, I attempt to explore their expertise. This time I sent three questions to Kyra de Vreeze. She writes articles about food and well being, gives lectures and workshops and provides tailor-made advise and training within companies. Kyra also teaches yoga in Utrecht.

1. What attracted you in developing a career in naturopathy instead of
taking up a standard education?

As a child I was already interested in natural medicine and at age 18, during a sabbatical in Australia, I decided I wanted to know everything there was to know about nutrition and health. I never really consciously decide to make a career out of it but because I like spending time practicing and learning, it turned out perfectly. It’s now a personal passion ànd a professional venture. Lucky me.

2. You propose a practical ayurvedic/western lifestyle in your writings, how
do you establish this as it seems the many rules of ayurveda often clash
with the western idea of freedom?

I don’t think of it as difficult. Of course it can be a challenge to balance moments of meditation and the chaos of a career. And eating natural and healthy foods whilst being part of a society that emphasises on the consumption of refined and prefab products.
And yes: there are rules within Ayurveda but I look at them more like guidelines or direction signs that can provide intelligent information but must be experienced first before we decide whether or not it works for us.
It should not be dogmatic but these guidelines also give structure and this actually makes our lives a bit more clean and easy. Too many choices and too much freedom can be just as difficult and frustrating as no freedom at all.

3. What would you like to have accomplished with your food for thought
project when you look back ten years from now?

I hope to inspire people to be more creative and adventurous when it comes to food. I often talk to people who struggle with food issues but because of their upbringing, their fears, the restrictions they put on themselves, lack of education and lack of practical guidelines they never try anything different. With words you can inspire and with practical experience you give people the tools to make changes themselves. Food is essential for our vitality and the right food gives us the energy to be successful and happy.
