Although efficient land use is not the sole reason for being a vegetarian for me, I got interested when I saw an headline about the vegetarian diet and land use in a Dutch newspaper, NRC Next.
It reported about findings by Cornell University:
“Although vegetarian diets in New York state may require less land per person, they use more high-valued land. ‘It appears that while meat increases land-use requirements, diets including modest amounts of meat can feed more people than some higher fat vegetarian diets,’”
from: “Diet for small planet may be most efficient if it includes dairy and a little meat, Cornell researchers report”
It is unclear to me to what extent they measured the influence of diary. I would like to see findings which compare the intake of a plant-based diet, a plant and dairy mixed diet and a meat/plant/diary mixed diet. I eat diary and veggies myself, so I would like to see how efficient my diet would be in comparison to a diet with modest consumption of meat.
