I spent sometime yesterday in Belgium with some good friends. One of them is educated in Ayur-veda, the ancient medicinal system of India. As such, he always pays close attention to health. While having dinner, he couldn’t help but notice my fast eating. I love food and have to admit I’ve had a habit of eating too quickly.
In Hinduism, food is always offered and considered holy afterwards. So paying attention to food and its preparation is very important. But apart from this, there are many reasons to slow down and enjoy your food.
Zenhabits list five reasons, I’ve rewritten them somewhat:
1. Lose weight (I rather gain some weight, which is also possible by eating slower but for others I understand the practicality of this reason).
2. Taste your food better. When you eat slower, you have more opportunity to taste the food.
3. Better digestion, if you eat slower, you will chew more and digestion starts in the mouth.
4. Less stress.
5. Rebel against fast food and fast living.

I am always trying to slow down eating while I am eating my food. Somehow I cannot seem to manage. I just like food to much and I want to eat as much as possible :). This probably explains why my tummy is growing. (No Tim, it’s not the beer!
I drink wine these days)
