Continuing with yesterday’s post about slow food, I feel I have little theme here. While walking through the park this afternoon, it just dawned on me how fast paced life in the city is. It has almost become cliche to make this statement, but life sometimes passes by without being conscious of it. We busy ourselves so much with goals and plans in the future that we don’t see what is right in front of us. Such a lifestyle leads to much stress as we are always running to make the next goal. I thought of 5 strategies to counter this:

1. Arrange your life. The still most talked about way to organize your life is Getting Things Done. The weblog what’s the next action gives 21 links to start with GTD. Of course, you can always buy the book by David Allen.

2. Eat slowly. The speed of the city infiltrates your food and, thus, your digestion. Bad for your health. So my advice is to chew more and take some time for your daily fuel.

3. Try out meditation. Feel like thoughts are racing through your head? This sounds like you need some stillness up there. Apart from the health benefits, it is a good relaxation exercise as well. But be warned, don’t listen to your mind or else you’ll find yourself pacing through the living room again.

4. Cook your own food. Cooking is meditation as well. It requires focus and concentration. What spices to add, how long to boil, how to deep fry. There is no room for other thoughts to speed up life again.

5. Go for a walk. or do any other exercise, but watch out that you don’t push yourself too much. When you feel like racing, this may enter your exercising as well. Working out should be good for you. If you feel really tired afterwards, you may have pushed yourself too much.

Good luck and if you have any other way to repace yourself, feel free to let me know in the comments.

Conscious breathing is a great strategy for repacing life. We often don’t realize that when we are caught up in the whirlwind of life, we may not be breathing very well. Taking a moment to stop and breathe deeply through the nose and exhaling through the mouth - say five times or so, helps to focus our mind.
Normally our mind communicates to our body, and we get physical sensations/reactions according to our state of mind. If we feel fear, we get an adrenaline rush and our body kicks into flight mode. We may feel tensing of the muscles or a knot in our stomach. It is possible to reverse the process though and make the body communicate to the mind how it should feel. Breathing does this, it relaxes the mind and helps with concentration and reduction of stress.

I like that, Madan Gopal. Very simple and free!
